Hash and checksum generator
InspectExperimentalLimited support. Verify anything critical.
A hash and checksum generator produces deterministic hexadecimal digests that can be compared with a publisher's expected value to detect accidental file changes. This tool accepts text or a local file, computes SHA-1 and SHA-256 with the browser Web Crypto API, and includes an independent MD5 implementation for compatibility checks. File bytes remain in browser memory, and MD5 plus SHA-1 are visibly treated as legacy integrity algorithms rather than secure password hashing.

Output
Limits
- Files are limited to 50 MB and are read into browser memory.
Warnings
- MD5 and SHA-1 are collision-broken; use SHA-256 for modern integrity checks
- never use these raw hashes for passwords.
How to use Hash and checksum generator
Verify a download
Compare the entire digest, not just its first or last characters. A match proves the bytes agree with the expected checksum, not that the publisher itself is trustworthy.
Legacy algorithms
MD5 and SHA-1 remain useful only when an existing system publishes those values. Prefer SHA-256 for new integrity workflows.
How it works
- Enter what you haveType or pick your text, local file. Nothing is submitted anywhere.
- It runs in this tabThe calculation happens on your device, using your browser's own data.
- Take the resultRead the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, then copy, download, or share a link.
SHA digests use Web Crypto; the compatibility-only MD5 routine is implemented locally from the published algorithm.

Frequently asked questions
Does selecting a file upload it?
No. The File API reads its bytes into this tab and the digest is computed locally.
